In 2013, Darren co-composed the soundtrack to We Are What We Are (film directed by Jim Mickle), writing for string section, solo cello and piano. His collaborator, Phil Mossman (LCD Soundsystem), worked in New York while Darren wrote at North Street Studios in the UK.
"It was an intense but successful transatlantic project lasting over 4 weeks, with my string and cello arrangements being emailed to Phil, arriving in New York in the nick of time to be printed out for the session player's music stand!" DM
Also in 2013, Darren worked on the pre-production of the soundtrack to 'Massive Attack Vs Adam Curtis', created and designed by Robert Del Naja. The show was premiered in Manchester and went on to be performanced in Germany and New York.
Darren's first major project involving film scoring was back in 1999, working with David Holmes on the soundtrack to 'Out of Sight' (Steven Soderbergh). During the 5 week sessions, Darren performed on fender rhodes piano, hammond organ, clav, piano and arranged for ebow guitar. The strong backbone of the team that was Tim Goldsworthy (Mo Wax & DFA Records) and Phil Mossman went on to record various projects with Holmes. Darren still collaborates with Tim and Phil today.
Darren has scored a number of independent short films, including the brilliantly quirky, 'Speak and Spell in St Leonards', that premiered at the Cannes Lions screening of Straight 8 in June 2012.
